Background
PDO Kenya is a community-based mental health organization based in Nakuru, Kenya. It was formed and is run by mental health lived experience experts and clinicians. We are driven by a passion for promoting wellness and assisting those affected to recover in dignity within their community. We are user-led both on the Board and at the executive. We are also youth-led, with the average age of our team at 27.7 years.
Our primary focus
Provision of human rights-based psychiatric and psychological services, social support, mental health advocacy and awareness, and alcohol and drug rehabilitation.
Mission
To provide people with mental health lived experience and addiction access to quality services to help them lead productive and fulfilling lives.
Key pillars of our organization:
1. Mental health equity – reducing disparity is access to quality care caused by systemic neglect and discrimination.
2. Community-based, recovery-oriented services – attains WHO Quality Rights standards, focused on recovery and keeping people away from institutions.
3. Person-centered, human rights-based approach – services are respectful, non-coercive and protect the person’s dignity.
4. Technological innovation in service delivery – we harness the power of technology to reduce cost, increase coverage and avail specialist care to underserved communities.
5. Power of lived experience expertise – experts by lived experience are at the centre of care and service delivery.
Our Work
PDO provides affordable community-based mental health care to those affected in Nakuru and other major towns in Kenya. Our online services go beyond our borders. Though open to all, we focus on reaching vulnerable groups, especially those with no other recourse to care. They include vulnerable adolescents, people with addictions, prisoners, low-income communities, children with ACEs in institutions, and gender-based violence survivors.
Our team
Our team of specialists is led by our consultant psychiatrist Prof. Gakinya and Dr. Karanja and five resident psychologists. We have a team of part-time specialists in Kenya, India, and Switzerland.
